Robert Griffin and the Washington Redskins appear to be headed for a split this offseason after Kirk Cousins led the team to the playoffs. Griffin is expected to be released this offseason and teams like the Dallas Cowboys, Cleveland Browns, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Rams and San Francisco 49ers could be potential landing spots.
Griffin has had his future in Washington up in the air since the team picked up his fifth year option before last season. Head coach Jay Gruden opted to go with Kirk Cousins as the starter last year and that likely means the end for Griffin in DC. According to NFL.com, Ian Rapoport reports that the Redskins are planning to cut Griffin before the league year begins on March 9, as his salary will be guaranteed to 4 pm ET on that day.
Griffin is set to get paid $16.155 million next season if the Redskins keep him around and that makes it unlikely that he will be on the roster for 2016. General manager Scot McCloughan spoke to the Washington Post about the quarterback situation, saying that the team is planning to sign Cousins long term. McCloughan also spoke about Griffin, calling him "a good football player" and saying that no decisions have been made yet and that the quarterback is still under contract.
McCloughan likely is just keeping his plans close to his vest, as the team is unlikely going to sign Cousins to a deal and keep Griffin on the roster. There is a chance the team could use the franchise tag on Cousins if a deal does not get done. Griffin had a stellar year in 2012 as a rookie when he led the Redskins to the playoffs, but injuries and inconsistency derailed his development in Washington.
Griffin did not get on the field this season and it's likely that he will be in a different uniform in 2016. NFL.com reported earlier in the season that Griffin would have interest from the Cowboys, Texans and Eagles if he was released. Dallas is likely going to add someone behind Tony Romo this offseason and RG3 could be a potential target. Yahoo Sports reports that sources have said that Griffin would "love" to end up in Dallas with the Cowboys.
The Eagles could be an option even with Chip Kelly gone, as Doug Pederson's offense could be a nice fit for Griffin. The Browns are a potential option with Johnny Manziel likely done in Cleveland, while the Texans also will be looking for some quarterback help this offseason. Griffin is still young and has the potential to develop into a consistent starter if he ends up in the right situation.
