The Houston Texans' biggest need is a quarterback this offseason. The team had five different players throwing passes at points this season and that cannot happen again. With solid offensive weapons already in place on the roster, the Texans are a desirable landing spot for free agents, but could a rookie in the draft be a better option for the future?
According to the Houston Chronicle, getting Sam Bradford makes sense at the right price. Bradford is the best free agent option this offseason as many wonder exactly where the quarterback is planning on going for his next contract. According to Philly.com, Bradford's agent is shooting for the moon in terms of money for the quarterback and the Texans could get priced out in a deal. With contracts going to other players, the Texans want to be smart and not overpay. That being said, Bradford is still a solid option to put under center. DeAndre Hopkins could appreciate the move.
The other name floating around for the Houston Texans is Robert Griffin III, but the chances he signs as a starter are slim to none. According to ESPN.com, teams are hesitant to take a chance on Griffin for anything more than a backup. However, HouseofHouston.com writes that if the Texans cannot sign Bradford, Griffin could be a good option considering he is ready to start immediately and might thrive under a solid coach like Bill O'Brien who has proven he can adjust his offense to meet the needs of the player. The Texans still managed to make the playoffs despite all of the quarterback issues this season which shows he could make something out of nothing with Griffin.
Griffin will come cheap unlike Bradford. The quarterback is expected to be released from the Washington Redskins and interest might be slim. The Texans could take advantage of that, sign Griffin and then draft a rookie to add to the rotation. The Texans could draft someone in the first round to start right away. The issue is that ESPN's Todd McShay is reporting none of the top options are guaranteed to find success in their rookie season. Carson Wentz, Jared Goff and Paxton Lynch are the best available, but can they start and succeed right away?
The Texans have a good roster that could allow a rookie to find success early. Hopkins along with Jaelen Strong and Cecil Shorts make up a solid wide receiver group. Arian Foster might not return, but Alfred Blue is developing into a solid running back and the team has a decent offensive line. Transitioning a rookie into the starting role might not be hard for Houston. However, with lingering doubt in the prospects, getting someone with previous NFL experience could be the favored option.
