The Dallas Cowboys will use the NFL Draft to find a future replacement for Tony Romo. They will also look for defensive help as players like Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain could potentially exit in free agency. While those needs are pressing, so is wide receiver depth. This year with Dez Bryant spending a good portion of the season injured, the Cowboys lacked the fire power to get the wins and that will be a need that must be addressed this offseason.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys will begin to search for wide receiver depth in either free agency or the NFL Draft. Bryant only played in nine games. Terrance Williams was not enough to get things done on the field. Devin Street did not show anything. Cole Beasley was average. That left quarterbacks scrambling to make something out of nothing which did not go well in Dallas. As a result, the Cowboys will make an addition to the rotation, but it remains to be seen just how big they go.
With the No.4 pick in the NFL Draft, the Cowboys are expected to select either a quarterback or a defensive player in either the pass rushing or cornerback position. That chances are high they pass up on Laquon Treadwell who is the best receiver in the draft along with others like Josh Doctson who will likely also go in the first round. The Cowboys must determine if a rookie is the best move to make over a free agent.
The free agent market for receivers is loaded this offseason with talent that will not command a high-priced contract. A lot of No.2 guys are available this offseason and with a healthy salary cap, the Cowboys could take advantage. Travis Benjamin, Rishard Matthews and Marvin Jones are all young receivers that could be the perfect complement to Bryant and company. Williams is not a heavy cap hit in 2016 which means the Cowboys have the freedom to spend a little bit of money at the position. Considering players like Street and Beasley did nothing in 2015, the Cowboys would be wise to upgrade the talent level.
The Cowboys have flexibility with Bryant signed to a long-term contract. The receiver underwent foot surgery when the season ended, but the Cowboys made it clear that they expect him to return to full form come the start of the 2016 season.
