The NFL is interested in bringing a team back to Los Angeles and three teams have officially applied for relocation with the Oakland Raiders, San Diego Chargers and St. Louis Rams submitting applications for a potential move.
The NFL has been working for a number of years to bring a team back to LA and this was one of the major steps in making that happen. According to Pro Football Talk, the league released a statement on Monday saying that three teams have applied about relocating to Los Angeles with the Raiders, Rams and Chargers providing the "the appropriate documentation" to potentially move. The team submitted applications and would be eligible for moving for the 2016 season if it is approved by the league owners.
The stadium situations for each team in their current cities have been the major issue in why those franchises want to relocate. According to CSN Bay Area, the Raiders and Chargers are joining together for a stadium in Carson if they were to move to Los Angeles. According to ESPN, Rams owner Stan Kroenke has put together a stadium plan for a site in Inglewood if the Rams were to relocate. The city of St. Louis is looking to keep the team with a $1.1 billion stadium proposal in the city.
The Raiders and Chargers have worked together on a $1.75 billion NFL stadium proposal for the Carson area for a site that the two teams would share. The Raiders and Chargers have both had issues getting new stadiums built in their current cities. The NFL has a committee regarding the "Los Angeles Opportunities" and that group will likely "make a formal recommendation" to NFL owners about which group has the best plan for relocation. According to ESPN.com, "NFL requires 24 votes to approve a team's relocation proposal."
CSN Bay Area reports that the NFL committee will meet this week in New York about the Los Angeles proposals and a vote could happen when the owners meet in Houston coming up this month. The report says that it is "believed that both sides have nine votes required to block the competition's plan" and that could lead the NFL to have discussions with owners to try and find the best solution. There is also a chance the league "tables" the discussion on relocation until the 2017 season.
