The New Orleans Saints loaded up on backfield help in the offseason. The team re-signed Mark Ingram to a nice contract extension while also going out and getting CJ Spiller who left the Buffalo Bills. The idea was that the Saints would have a dynamic tandem in the backfield that could also make an impact in the passing game. While that has worked out in some aspects, it has not been consistent and Spiller is not thrilled.

The return on the $9 million in guaranteed money the Saints invested in Spiller has not been good. Against the Tennessee Titans, he played on just six snaps. He had three touches total. So far on the season, Spiller has 86 yards rushing and 198 yards receiving. That is not what the Saints nor Spiller was expecting and the running back is making it clear that his low numbers are not his fault.

"I go in when I'm told to go in. There's nothing I can change," Spiller said, via ESPN.com. "I know what I can present to this league. So it's the same questions, [but] there's no different answer. That'd be something, I guess for upstairs to answer, not me. I haven't went up there and asked for an explanation. Obviously, there has to be a reason behind it. ... But I feel good, and I stay in-tuned into the game so when I am called upon I'm ready to go out there and play. Obviously, you want to play more. You're a competitor, you want to be out there, but you can't play with 12 people on the field."

Part of the issue for Spiller is that Ingram is playing well. The running back has proven he can handle the added responsibilities of being a leading rusher and it is showing on the field. That has pushed Spiller to the side. While head coach Sean Payton has stressed the Saints are going with what the defense is giving them, but with the losses pilling up, putting the ball in the dynamic rusher's hands is not the worst idea. New Orleans has a game against the Redskins on Sunday and Spiller wants to be involved.

"I don't know. I'm pretty sure the coaches haven't forgotten I can run the ball pretty well. I mean, they have the film. They're with me every day at practice," Spiller said, via ESPN.com. "So it's just one of those things, [Sunday] I didn't play."

The Saints have been benefitting from smaller names stepping up to help. While Ingram was expected to make a big impact, players like Willie Snead and Benjamin Watson have been surprises this season. Drew Brees has been trying to make the most of the offensive players he has to work with. Getting Spiller back in the mix could be the x-factor to the rest of the year.
