The Oakland Raiders signed Trent Richardson as a free agent this offseason and after opening camp failing his conditioning test, the running back has returned and now he is in the mix for Derek Carr behind likely starter Latavius Murray along with Roy Helu, Michael Dyer and Marcel Reece at running back on the depth chart.

The Raiders are hoping for some major improvement with Jack Del Rio taking over and it comes after the team added Amari Cooper, Michael Crabtree, Richardson and Helu in the offseason. Cooper is expected to start right away and he comes in after being taken fourth overall in the NFL draft. Derek Carr started all 16 games for the Raiders last season and the team is expecting him to take another step forward this year. The Raiders are looking for a more consistent rushing attack and Murray could have the edge to win the starting job.

Helu and Richardson were signed in the offseason and Murray is coming in after being the backup for Darren McFadden. The Raiders let McFadden go this offseason and he signed with the Dallas Cowboys and now Murray has the chance to win the starting job. According to Ian Rapoport at NFL.com, Richardson has a "50 percent" chance of making the roster out of training camp, as he has started off on the wrong foot by failing his conditioning test for camp. Murray is being predicted as the starter in Oakland, according to ESPN.com.

Richardson already is coming in after two disappointing seasons in Indianapolis for the Colts and now he has an uphill climb to make the Raiders. Murray showed some flashes of potential last season after missing his rookie year with an injury and he has the chance to be the number one back on the depth chart. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, Murray is opening camp working with the first team offense and the team is comfortable with Murray being the lead back over Richardson.

Last season Murray played in 15 games and finished the year with 424 yards and two touchdowns on just 82 carries. Murray also showed some skills out of the backfield, putting up 17 catches for 143 yards and he ended up averaging 5.2 yards per carry for the season. Richardson is going to have to prove himself in camp for the Raiders and he comes in after signing a two-year, $3.85 million deal. But Richardson is only making $600,000 in guaranteed money on the contract and that could make the running back more expendable if he does not perform up to expectations. Richardson rushed for a career low 519 yards last season and he has scored only six touchdowns since scoring 11 for the Browns his rookie year.
