The Dallas Cowboys restructured Tony Romo's contract in order to free up more salary cap space in the offseason. They have yet to really do anything with that extra money, but they are trying to get more. Heading into the 2015 season, the team has a lot of high-priced contracts with more coming which is why getting player's like Brandon Carr to lower their number is essential which could help everything from Dez Bryant's contract to that running back trade.
According to the Dallas Morning News, the Cowboys are trying to get Carr to lower his salary cap number from the $12.717 it currently is. Carr is currently approaching the end of a five-year, $50.1 million contract while set to earn $8 million in the coming season. The cornerback has yet to say whether or not he is willing to take a pay cut, but the Cowboys will at least attempt to negotiate it.
"I'm a Cowboy. I love being a Cowboy. As long as I'm in this building, I'm going to give it my all," Carr said, via the Dallas Morning News.
The Cowboys need a little more cap space relief. The team is preparing to sign Bryant to a mega contract in the coming year. According to Stephen Jones via ESPNDallas.com, he is uncertain if Bryant's contract will get done this year simply because the market for receivers is unknown. Alongside Bryant, Julio Jones, AJ Green and Demaryius Thomas need new deals and the Cowboys are more content with waiting for someone else to sign first.
"There's three or four young receivers in this league other than Dez that are going to be looking for long term contracts," Jones said."No one has been able to really figure out what they think the market should be. I think ultimately we'll get this done. No one wants to have Dez long term involved with the Dallas Cowboys more so than our organization, Jerry and myself."
The team is also looking in to running back trades regardless of how much confidence they express in Darren McFadden's ability to regain his old rushing form. Jerry Jones hinted that the Cowboys would be willing to deal their 2016 first-round draft pick for a game-changing back which could mean either Adrian Peterson or Matt Forte are intended targets. In order to get either player, cap space must be cleared. That starts with Carr as the Cowboys will push negotiations for a pay cut.
