The Buffalo Bills may look at the release of Fred Jackson after the trade for LeSean McCoy, as they have Bryce Brown on the roster and could cut the running back and if that happens, the longtime fan favorite likely will be a target for the Pittsburgh Steelers, Dallas Cowboys, Miami Dolphins, San Francisco 49ers, Arizona Cardinals, NY Jets and Giants on the market.

There have been some conflicting reports about Jackson and his status in Buffalo, as Jason LaCanfora at CBS Sports reported that he could be released this week after the trade for LeSean McCoy. The report said that Jackson could be let go if the team signs Bilal Powell, as they traded a pick for Bryce Brown last year and may not want to part ways with him. Jackson comes in after signing an extension last summer and McCoy just got a rich new deal at $8 million per season.

The Bills have a solid amount of cap space, but they just paid big for Jerry Hughes and after adding McCoy, they may have to find other areas to cut. Jackson is considered a fan favorite player and many likely would be upset if he goes. Jackson is 34 years old and that could be part of the issue and he is making just over $2 million next season, which isn't that much in the grand scheme of things. Jackson is apparently not going anywhere, but the rumors popped up and until it is officially next year, Jackson could be on the chopping block.

The report came out over the weekend and the Buffalo News now reports that Jackson "isn't going anywhere" this offseason. Sources told reporter Tim Graham that new owner Terry Pegula stepped in to make sure nothing happened with Jackson and that means he could end up staying. McCoy makes things tough, as he just signed a new contract and will be expecting to have the bulk of the carries on offense.

Last season Jackson averaged just 3.7 yards per carry and had 525 yards in 14 games played along with 66 catches for 501 yards. Jackson is a versatile back and he has had at least 31 catches in every season apart from his rookie season. Two years ago Jackson had 896 yards and in the past he has had at least 1000 yards in one season and at least 900 in three overall. Jackson is getting older, but he is a veteran leader and if he ends up leaving Buffalo, expect teams to go after him.

La Canfora reported that "contenders" have checked up on Jackson and if he hits the market, he would have suitors. The Patriots could be a potential fit if they lose Shane Vereen in free agency, as both players have the same skillset. The Dolphins need help at RB with Knowshon Moreno hitting the market, while the Dallas Cowboys are in the same boat if they let DeMarco Murray go. The Eagles signed Frank Gore, but they also could go for depth at running back and Jackson likely fits what Chip Kelly is trying to do in Philly. The Steelers have Le'Veon Bell suspended to start the season and they also could chase.
