The Seattle Seahawks enter the 2015 offseason with the goal of re-signing everyone and keeping the potential dynasty going. The Seahawks have plenty of key free agents this offseason, but smart moves with their salary cap space have afforded the team the chance to get everyone under a favorable contract while also making Russell Wilson the highest-paid quarterback in the league. However, what additions does Seattle need to make in order to get back to the Super Bowl?
According to ESPN Draft Expert Mel Kiper Jr, the Seahawks are targeting a wide receiver in the draft this year. One thing some might say about the Seahawks is that in 2014 they lacked a real deep-threat receiver. After trading Percy Harvin and allowing Sidney Rice to retire, Seattle was left with Doug Baldwin, Jermaine Kearse, Paul Richardson and Kevin Norwood. Chris Matthews and Ricardo Lockette made an impact as well. While Baldwin and Kearse are quality options, that is not exactly an elite receiving corps set to make a Super Bowl.
With Marshawn Lynch potentially heading off into the land of retirement, the Seahawks will be without one of their best playmakers and could aim to get wide receiver help to compensate. Kiper believes with the 31st pick in the draft, the Seahawks will select Miami's Phillip Dorsett. The 5-foot-9 receiver will not tower over the defenders, but he might be the fastest player in the draft this year. His speed and agility would be a good match for their offense. However, size is an issue and the Seahawks might seek a bigger body like Sammie Coates who comes in at 6-2, 215 pounds.
However, the Seahawks are at risk of losing some names on defense and might opt to spend their first pick on that side of the ball while looking to free agency for help at the receiver position. With a goal of not overspending, players like Dez Bryant, Mike Wallace and Andre Johnson are out of the picture. However, Seattle could look to players like Hakeem Nicks, Michael Crabtree or Torrey Smith instead. All three receivers have the potential of being a top deep threat, but are coming off seasons where they simply cannot demand big numbers. They would be steals for Seattle.
The Seahawks intend to first re-sign Wilson to a deal and see where they are at after that. With Lynch's future unknown, the Seahawks needed playmakers on offense and the wide receiver spot moving forward.
