The Toronto Maple Leafs and NY Islanders are playing live on the NHL schedule on Friday and the matchup from the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum starts at 7 pm ET and has New York looking to keep things going, as they are leading their division as one of the best teams in the eastern conference.

The Leafs have been one of the most disappointing teams in the NHL this season, while the Islanders have been one of the biggest surprises. The Islanders have been working on getting talent the past few years and it has paid off, as they are leading the Metro division and have been one of the most consistent teams in the NHL with John Tavares leading the way.

The Islanders come into the game after winning over the Oilers at home and they will next host the Blue Jackets on the schedule. the Islanders are ranked fourth in the league in scoring and ninth in power play percentage and while they are 30th in penalty kill and 23rd in goals against, they have been able to stay in first place. The team is one to watch this year, as the east is a bit wide open after the way the standings have developed.

Tavares is tops in goals and points for the Islanders and right now they are battling with the Tampa Bay Lightning as the best team in the east. The Canadiens, Penguins, Red Wings, Caps and Rangers are all in the mix at the top of the standings and the Islands are trying to keep the Pens at bay with a one point lead. The Leafs come in with 50 points on the season and they lost to the Rangers in their last game and will next play against Montreal in an all-Canada matchup. The team is seventh in penalty kill, but ranked 25th in goals against this season, which is deadly with Tavares coming in.

Phil Kessel is tops in goals, assists and points for the Leafs and they need him to continue playing well for any chance at getting things in the right direction. The Islanders had lost four of five games before winning over Buffalo and now the team is back home for a stretch and is looking to pad their lead in the standings. The team has played well and the Leafs come in after snapping an 11 game losing streak. The Islanders are one of the favorites and they could be the sleeper team in the east.
