Derek Jeter #2 of the New York Yankees looks on after he was left on deck during the final out of a game against the Baltimore Orioles at Yankee Stadium on September 24, 2014 in the Bronx borough of New York City. "

The Baltimore Orioles and New York Yankees are playing live on the MLB Network TV schedule on Thursday and the game is starting up at 7:05 pm ET weather permitting and that could mean yesterday was Derek Jeter's final game at Yankee Stadium if the game isn't played and the Yanks are hoping that it is and the matchup comes from the Bronx and will be a curtain call for number 2, because that's what this season has been all about.

The Yankees will have Hiroki Kuroda against Kevin Gausman in the pitching matchup and he has been one of the most consistent Yanks all season, meaning he hasn't been injured. The pitching has been killed by injuries and the team has lost CC Sabathia, Masahiro Tanaka and Michael Pineda for extended periods of time this year. The Yankees lost again against the Orioles and that was the first time Derek Jeter played at home with the Yankees out of playoff contention and that is the way he will end his career.

Many hoped that the Yankees would make one last run to the playoffs, but that did not happen this season and now he will retire and ride off into the sunset. Jeter has not had a great season offensively and no 40 year old shortstop would, but the Yankees sacrificed runs, wins and more by not moving Jeter in the order at all during the season and while they won't admit it, that was a contributing factor to the poor play on offense this season. Yes, no one in the lineup really hit, but having one of the worst offensive everyday players in the league at the two hole didn't help matters either.

Jeter is going down as one of the best Yankees of all-time and one of the best players ever and that of course is not in dispute. He leaves with tons of team records in the regular season and the postseason and Jeter is looking to end his career with a win, even if it's technically meaningless. It's unclear whether or not he will play in Boston for the final three games and that likely depends on what happens on Thursday night.

The Yankees have had a tough season and they have now missed the playoffs in back to back seasons for the first time in a long time and that is tough for Derek Jeter as he rides off at the end of his career. The Yankees finish the series weather permitting against the Orioles and then play against the Red Sox to end the season.
