Rory McIlroy of Northern Ireland acknowledges the crowd after making a birdie putt on the 12th green during the first round of the British Open Championship at the Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake, northern England July 17, 2014. "

The PGA Tour Leaderboard is live from the British Open Championship at Royal Liverpool and Rory McIlroy has won at Royal Liverpool and he won with a two stroke lead and he went wire to wire and was 17 under overall with a two stroke lead over Sergio Garcia and Rickie Fowler for the major victory and he now has made some history, while Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson were back in the scores.

Round 1 and now things are into Round 2 as the major golf tournament gets underway and Rory Milroy leads a large group of players that includes Tiger Woods and Rickie Fowler, while names like Phil Mickelson, Woods, Adam Scott and Bubba Watson try to get in position for a solid round three and a chance at leading the weekend action.

Mickelson won the Claret jug last year and now Woods comes in after an injury looking to shock everyone. Woods has won in Liverpool before and now he gets his chance after missing the cut in his last tournament. McIlroy has played much better than last season and now he has shown that he can do it again, putting up a six under for his first round with a score of 66 for the early lead after the first set of players finished their days. McIlroy has started off hot in a number of tournaments this year before flaming out and now he will try and avoid doing that again.

McIlroy was impressive and so was Woods, as he opened with a bogey and a bogey before settling down and he eventually rallied to have a three under with a score of 69 and getting under 70 for his first round is huge. Woods was rusty coming back a couple weeks ago and this time around he should really just try to stay in contention until Sunday and even if he doesn't get the win, a strong performance here could be big for the rest of the season.

The afternoon session is now underway as things on the east coast get started for people at work and now Phil Mickelson has started his day and he is even early. Zach Johnson is also getting started and there are four players who can take number one from Adam Scott depending on how the Open plays out. McIlroy played a clean day and he ended up without any bogeys on his first round score sheet and that gives him a nice boost heading into Friday. McIlroy opened up with three birdies over his first six holes and added three more down the line and now he has the chance to win another major if he can keep it up.

Everyone wants Woods to get back on the mantle when it comes to majors, as his US Open now feels like a long time ago. Woods said that he has shown that he can win after an injury and now he has the chance to prove it again. Many thought Woods would be out for the entire season after dealing with his back injury and now he is back in action and this is the first major he has played in this year and he hopes to take the title from Phil Mickelson.
