The PGA Tour leaderboard at the FedEx St. Jude Classic golf tournament on Sunday saw Ben Crane stay on top of Troy Merritt to win the tournament, his first in a couple years and he took the title after some great play on the final round and he had to play 30 holes on the final day due to rain and weather during the weekend.
The leaderboard on Saturday has Ben Crane up over Phil Mickelson as well as Carl Pettersson ahead of Retief Goosen and Troy Merritt with Phil chasing after a nice performance at TPC Southwind in Memphis after his whirlwind week and the scores are still coming in after a delay and things pick up the final round on Sunday and it has Round 3 and the final Round 4 to play for some golfers.
After the final for the day in the first round, as play was suspended and now the second round will pick up on Friday and it comes after lefty shot a 67 and finished his round and the coverage is live on Friday finishing the first round and going into the second round.
Mickelson had a very good day while dealing with all his insider trading issues and it would be perfect Phil if he came back and won this tournament ahead of the US Open. This is the last warm-up for players heading into the major and Tiger Woods is already out of things with an injury and Phil now has the chance to sharpen his game. Mickelson ended up with a 67 on the day and he had five birdies and two bogeys to finish three under and he now has a nice spot coming into the second round.
Mickelson finished the day strong and that is one reason why he played so well and ended up in the top part of the leaderboard, as he had three birdies on his final four holes. Mickelson now has his first round under 60 since back in the third round at the Wells Fargo Championship and he has mostly been a mess since then, shooting over 70 all those other times and he also missed the Players Championship cut and was just in the top 50 at the Memorial and now he looks like he has his groove back.
Mickelson is still dealing with his issues about the insider trading investigation, but he clearly has things together heading into Friday's round. Many players got to finish their rounds, but Merritt was still playing when play was suspended and he is tied for first at four under, while Freddie Jacobsen is in third with Mickelson at three back.
The next major on the schedule is the U.S. Open Golf Championship from Pinehurst Resort in NC and that is coming on June 12 and has Justin Rose as the defending champion. Tiger Woods is out of that tournament with a back injury and there is a chance that he will also miss the Open Championship. The British Open is soon after that from Royal Liverpool and it's likely that Woods will miss that if he is still not on his way back to playing. The PGA Championship is in August and he could return for that, but it's shaping up to be a lost year for Woods.
