The PGA Tour schedule is heading towards the next major tournament with the US Open Golf Championship and before that is the FedEx St. Jude Classic tourney and that will be on June 5 before the June 12 starting date for the Open and Rory McIlroy, Adam Scott and Phil Mickelson will be looking for glory, while Tiger Woods will be out of the major with an injury.

The schedule has the next two tournaments coming up after the Memorial Tournament this past weekend and that ended with some drama, as Bubba Watson faltered down the stretch and Hideki Matsuyama ended up winning in a playoff. The tournament was great through the three days over the weekend and it came after Adam Scott won the Crowne Plaza Invitational at Colonial before that and that win put him at number one in the world now over Tiger Woods. Woods is still dealing with a back injury and he could miss the entire year, but he has not ruled out returning yet, but he will not be there for the US Open.

The U.S. Open Golf Championship starts on June 12 at Pinehurst Resort and comes on ESPN and NBC for the live coverage after Justin Rose won the major last year. Woods is out of action and he has not played since March after the WGC-Cadillac Championship and that came after his WD at the Honda and his struggles early in the season with an injury. Woods I now number three in the world behind Scott and Henrik Stenson and now he will have to come back strong to have a chance at getting it back.

Majors are more important than being number one for Woods, but he got that rank back last year from Rory McIlroy after some fantastic play and now that feels like ages ago. Woods won five times on tour last year, three coming ahead of the Masters and now he will be lucky to finish in the top five at a major if he even gets to play in one this year. This could be a lost year for Woods, but it also could give him the time to heal up and get healthy heading into next year. Woods is still rehabbing and has not been able to do his full routine of shots yet since getting surgery. Woods has 14 major titles and none since the US Open in 2008 and that makes missing the US Open hurt even more.

McIlroy won the European Tour the week before last after breaking up with Carolina Wozniacki and now he is looking to add another major to his mantle as well. The Open Championship is coming from Royal Liverpool this year and Woods has won there before and that comes in five weeks and it will be interesting to see if Woods can make that tourney.
