The Atlanta Falcons gave a nice free agent contract to Steven Jackson last offseason, but are fully aware that he will not be on the field for too much longer. Behind Jackson is Jaquizz Rodgers who has the skillset to develop into something special. Outside of those two, the Falcons have nothing and are in need of another solid runner to add to the mix. While Atlanta continue to sort through draft prospects, could a trade also be in the works?

Atlanta took a close look at the free agent running backs. The team eyed Maurice Jones-Drew and even discussed a trade for Chris Johnson while he was still with the Tennessee Titans. However, the Falcons failed to make any moves, leaving them to draft a rookie or make a trade. Both Jackson and Rodgers are quality options, but after Jason Snelling opted to retire, they have no depth. Given Jackson's injury history, Atlanta needs another player to help out. He missed a significant amount of time last season and could easily have the same thing happen again.

According to Bleacher Report, The Atlanta Falcons are listed a possible suitor for the LaMichael James trade. The San Francisco 49ers are actively shopping the back. With Frank Gore healthy and Marcus Lattimore returning, James have become buried on the depth chart. Fully aware of his standings with the team, James failed to show up to offseason workouts. While these are voluntary, it speaks volumes to how ready he is to move on from the 49ers.

James want to be on a team that he will actually play on and the Falcons could offer him that opportunity. James' worth on the open market is the biggest question. He was a second round pick in 2012 and has just 184 yards to his name in two seasons. His legs are very fresh and could be a better pickup than a rookie. James would likely command a third-round pick at the highest which is where the Falcons might be drafting the position anyways.

Outside of James, Atlanta is looking at several top rookies. The team is bringing in former Ohio State rusher Carlos Hyde for the visit before the draft. He has already worked out for the team and they are bringing him back for a second visit. The Falcons are also eyeing LSU standout Jeremy Hill as a solid option for depth.

The Falcons are also considering making a trade up for Jadeveon Clowney which could impact their interest in James. Everything is up in the air with still over two weeks until the NFL Draft, but the Falcons need a running back and these are the only options left.
