Knowshon Moreno is finally seeing some interest begin to generate around him. The running back has been sitting on the market and after a career-best season, it was assumed that a team would have picked him up already. Instead, players like Ben Tate and Rashad Jennings signed over Moreno, leaving many to wonder why the former Denver Broncos star is still unemployed. However that is changing as the Miami Dolphins are bringing him in for a visit.
The running back market is never easy. Teams are more inclined to draft a rookie with young and fresh legs over taking a veteran with years already in the league. However, 2013 proved that Moreno can be a real threat on the field. In the pass-first Broncos offense, Moreno ran for 1,039 yards averaging 4.3 per carry while recording 10 touchdowns. He is likely the best back available and the Dolphins are taking notice.
Armando Salguero of the Miami Herald reports the Dolphins have scheduled a visit for Friday with the running back, hoping it extends into the weekend with a contract. Miami is in desperate need of a marquee running back. After losing Reggie Bush to the Detroit Lions, the ground game for the Dolphins struggled heavily last season. The team failed to average 100 yards per game, ranking them in the bottom of the league.
The team opted to go for youth with Lamar Miller and Daniel Thomas, both of which never truly developed into a ground game threat. Miller led the pack with 709 yards on the year with just two touchdowns. That simply will not fly come 2014.
If Moreno leaves Miami without a contract, LeGarrette Blount could be next on the list. The running back is also coming off a career-best season with the New England Patriots and is still available. Blount has not garnered any interest as well despite being one of the better backs. He is aggressive and would be a solid addition for the Dolphins.
Miami could also make a trade for Chris Johnson, but that seems unlikely since the team needs to hold on to their draft picks. Maurice Jones-Drew is unsigned and could be a third option for their rotation. Miami will also draft a rookie, but seeing how Miller and Thomas did, they need a veteran in the mix.
