McIlroy and Wozniacki started the New Year with a bang on January 1, 2014 by announcing their engagement on Twitter. "

Rory McIlroy would be the first to say that he had a tough year on tour in 2013 on the course and in the tabloids with breakup rumors, but the New Year is already starting off pretty well, as the golfer proposed and is now engaged to tennis star Caroline Wozniacki after doing it on New Year's and the two announced the engagement on Twitter and now he hopes to put his struggles on the course behind him.

The two got hitched after numerous rumors came out this year about the couple breaking up and many on the tour and in the media had opinions about why McIlroy struggled so much this year and now two of the youngest rising stars in their respective sports will be married. McIlroy proposed on New Year's and the two announced the news on social media and this came after he had a great year in 2012 and he is hoping to get back on track for the 2014 season on the PGA Tour.

McIlroy did not win for a year before taking Australian Open title to finish things off on the right track and this comes after he had a controversial change in equipment that may have factored into things as well. McIlroy won majors two years in a row, but struggled at all four in 2013 and now he is looking to stay the course as the schedule picks up in the new year.

McIlroy did not win a major in 2013, but he says that two are on the horizon for 2014 and this comes after he proposed to his girlfriend and now him and tennis star Carolina Wozniacki will be married after there were numerous reports that the two would be breaking up and here is more from Reuetrs.com on the engagement and his year. Rory McIlroy and his tennis-playing girlfriend Caroline Wozniacki started the New Year with a bang on Wednesday by announcing their engagement on Twitter. Former world number one Rory McIlroy feels like he has his mojo back and wants to win two major championships this year to make up for a poor season in 2013.

The young Northern Irishman ruled the golfing roost in 2012, winning five titles, but a change of equipment and some off-course legal distractions coincided with a slump in form that has seen him slide to sixth in the rankings.

McIlroy ended a 12-month drought by landing last month's Australian Open title and he said that victory had restored his belief going into the new season. McIlroy, who announced his engagement to former world number one tennis player Caroline Wozniacki earlier this week, said he was learning to handle the pressure of competing for golf's top prizes.

"Happy New Year everyone! I have a feeling it's going to be a great year!! My first victory of 2014 #shesaidyes!!," golfer McIlroy, who rang in the New Year with Wozniacki in Sydney, wrote.

The two former world number ones in their respective sports have been dating for more than two years and erroneous reports their relationship was over last year was proposed by some as an explanation for McIlroy's drop in form.

Northern Irishman McIlroy, 24, had to wait until December to claim his first title of the season when he dramatically edged Adam Scott on the final hole to win the Australian Open.

Wozniacki, 23, pulled out of this week's Brisbane International with an injured right shoulder but is confident she will be able to play in this week's Sydney International in preparation for the January 13-26 Australian Open.

"Happy New Year everyone! Rory and I started 2014 with a bang! ... I said YES!!!!" Wozniacki tweeted above a picture of her hand sporting an engagement ring. If I give myself a chance in these tournaments I know I'll have a great opportunity to win. I feel I am very close, I'm confident with my game and confident where it's going," added McIlroy who won the U.S. Open in 2011 and the U.S. PGA Championship a year later." (Reuters)
