The Boston Red Sox took the early advantage in the World Series on Wednesday night and the St. Louis Cardinals are hurting, as Carlos Beltran was injured on an amazing catch in the second inning, smashing into the outfield wall as he robbed David Ortiz of a home run.

According to ESPN.com, Beltran is day to day and his x-rays came back negative, although he did suffer some bruising on his ribs. The report says that he had nothing serious from the injury and that it will be taken day to day and could be a huge loss for the Cardinals if he has to miss any time, as Beltran has been one of the best players on offense and defense for the team this season and now with the 8-1 loss, the team is down in the series 1-0.

Beltran made the amazing catch on a possible grand slam from David Ortiz at Fenway Park and that would have been his second of the playoffs after the one he hit against the Tigers. Torii Hunter went after that one and couldn't make it, while this time Beltran was able to take the ball out from over the wall, but he slammed hard into it and hit his arm as well, but luckily for him that was not injured. The wall was perfect size for what he was doing, but it also lined up perfectly with his ribs and that is how he suffered the contusion.

The Cardinals are hoping he can play on Thursday night and he comes into the postseason while hitting .337 with 16 homers and 37 RBIs in his career and this season he hit nearly .300 and had over 20 home runs with 84 RBIs and he is one of the most productive players for the Cardinals. This year he has 12 RBIs and should be in the lineup on Thursday, while on Wednesday John Jay moved to center field and Shan Robinson went from center to right field after he came out of the game.

Having a Beltran not quite at 100 percent will be tough for the Cardinals, but if he doesn't miss any time, it will be a big bullet dodged and he made a fantastic catch, showing off why he is so valuable to the team. He made that amazing throw against the Dodgers and the Cardinals need his arm and his glove in the field. There is a chance that he could play some DH, but Allen Craig is there after dealing with a foot injury and that may not be what Mike Matheny wants to do.

Beltran looked fine coming off the field, but it was noticeable that he was favoring one side and in between innings he went into the clubhouse and then came out of the game. The x-rays came back clean as Matheny said after the game and now he will be day to day.
