Sebastian Vettel will look for another victory in Formula One this year after taking pole in the Italian Grand Prix at Monza.

Vettel already has a sizeable lead in the drivers' championship standings and a win here in Italy will pretty much take him to the cusp of another title.

"It's always nice to come back here," Vettel said. "Obviously the memories of 2008 are great. I had another victory in 2011 but I think the first victory is always special. Today (Saturday) I think, or generally this weekend, the car was fantastic so far.

"I think better than what we could expect. We had a very strong pace yesterday and we were able to take that into the qualifying. I had two good runs in the end.

"In the end I think it's a bit of a surprise to have both cars on the front row at a place where historically we've had bad years. Yeah, this year it seems to work well and hopefully we'll have a good race from where we start tomorrow (Sunday).

Red Bull teammate Mark Webber will lineup alongside Vettel, while Sauber's Nico Hulkenberg took a surprise third.

Ferrari, desperate to do their best at their home GP, could only manage fourth and fifth with Felipe Massa lining up ahead of Fernando Alonso.

"Normally on a race weekend the worst point for us are the Saturdays -- the qualifying -- as there are frequently three or four cars between us and the Red Bulls," Alonso said. "So we start the race having to pass these cars and when we've managed that the Red Bulls are seconds ahead of us -- and normally we keep that distance throughout the race.

"So we are lucky as it looks promising that tomorrow (Sunday) at the start we will not have these three or four cars ahead of us. We don't have (Lewis) Hamilton, we don't have Kimi (Raikkonen) to slow us a bit in the first corner, and we usually have a great pace on Sunday.

"If we are able to show our normal Sunday pace tomorrow there is no reason why we should not be able to follow the Red Bulls."
