Southampton continued their big spending this transfer window by announcing the capture of Pablo Osvaldo from Roma for a club record fee.

The Saints have already made a few impressive signings this season in the mould of Dejan Lovren and Victor Wanyama and they have now added the talented forward Osvaldo to the list for a an initial fee of £12.9 million ($20.1 million) with it rising by a further £1.7 million ($2.6 million) based on performances and appearances.

"Southampton Football Club is delighted to announce the signing of Italy striker Pablo Daniel Osvaldo," Saints said in a statement on their official website.

"Osvaldo agreed terms on a four-year contract with Saints and moves from Serie A side A.S. Roma.

"The frontman is expected to be available for next Saturday's Barclays Premier League game against Sunderland at St Mary's, and will be officially presented as a Southampton player tomorrow (Monday)."

Osvaldo, who has won nine Italy caps, was linked with Manchester City and Tottenham earlier in the summer but Southampton manager Mauricio Pochettino has managed to convince the Argentine-born striker to move to St Mary's having worked with the player at Espanyol.

"AS Roma announces that it has signed an agreement with Southampton Football Club for the outright sale of the rights to the player Pablo Daniel Osvaldo for an amount of 15.1 million euros," Roma said in a statement on their official website.

"The agreement also provides for the receipt of a variable fee, up to a maximum of 2million euros. These bonuses are linked to the achievement of the player and performance-based goals."

Southampton made a bright start to their English Premier League campaign with a 1-0 win over West Brom, thanks to a penalty from newly-minted England international Rickie Lambert.

With Osvaldo also now joining the club, Southampton now have a potent strikeforce, something that is essential to succeed in the Premier League.
