The Pittsburgh Steelers have always been known for their grit and toughness on the field. The team comes with a well-documented work ethic that pays off throughout the season. Rookies are expected to pick this up immediately after being signed to the team, no exceptions. If new players cannot demonstrate these qualities, they have no hope in making it. Jarvis Jones took note of that when he first stepped on the field in Pittsburgh and has not looked back since.

Jones is crediting his college experience for his worth ethic now as a professional. Jones spent his college years with the University of Georgia that played in the Southeastern Conference, known for producing NFL-ready talent. The team operated under an NFL-like atmosphere, playing against some of the best talent week in and week out. Georgia's alumni list features a heavy amount of NFL greats and Jones intends on being one.

"Georgia's 3-4 system under Coach Grantham was very helpful for me and my pro career at Pittsburgh. There may be more to do here and it may be more complex, but what I learned at Georgia has given me an advantage with the Steelers. To begin with, I am playing for a first-class organization," Jones said.

After the departure of linebacker James Harrison in the offseason, there is an open spot on field for Jones. The Steelers are not known for starting rookies, especially on defense, and they do not plan on bending the rules for Jones. Just because Jones was a first-round pick with a strong college resume, he is not guaranteed to see the field immediately. However, he has made a great first impression on coaches.

"Jarvis came in here with a no-nonsense, 'I'm ready to work' attitude. All along I felt that he would be a good fit for us and that we are good fit for him. I am confident that he will have a fine NFL career. He makes plays and he has the kind of attitude to succeed and improve," said defensive coordinator Dick LeBeau.

Jones' main competitor for a starting role will be Jason Worilds. Some say Jones has the edge, but according to head coach Mike Tomlin, nothing will be given and Jones has to earn his spot. The rookie comes into a similar defensive system would could prove very fruitful for the Steelers.
