Home favorite Lewis Hamilton stormed to pole with a scorching final lap, which left everyone else in his wake at the British Grand Prix.

Hamilton timed a searing 1:29.607 to top the timesheets from Mercedes teammate Nico Rosberg, who lines up alongside the Brit in the front row after posting a time of 1:30.059.

"It's incredible! It feels just like it did in 2007," Hamilton said. "Just to see the crowd here today (Saturday) is fantastic -- such a great turnout from everyone.

"So that was a lap for them. I hope that tomorrow (Sunday) we can do something special for them but this is really down to the team. They've been doing a phenomenal job, improving the car constantly.

"I haven't been feeling 100 percent comfortable all weekend -- so I was really happy to finally get a lap."

Red Bull duo Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber locked up the second row, while another local lad Paul Di Resta of Force India gave the 90,000 crowd something more to cheer about by taking fifth place on the grid.

"It's a long race but honestly very happy," Vettel, who leads the driver's championship by 36 points, said. "I don't know, either Lewis found a short cut or he has something special around here. A phenomenal lap.

"I think it wasn't in reach today. I was very happy with the lap I had at the end. And I think it was very close with Mark as well. I think we did what we could for the team and, yeah, it's always nice to position well in qualifying.

"Especially around here qualifying is good fun, enjoying the high-speed corners and looking forward to tomorrow, for the race. We'll see how well we are with tyres, looking after them. But as I said, for now very happy for the team."

Di Resta's teammate Adrian Sutil settled for seventh, with Toro Rosso's Daniel Ricciardo sandwiching the two Force India drivers.

Lotus duo Romain Grosjean and Kimi Raikkonen took eight and ninth respectively, while Fernando Alonso disappointed managing just tenth place on the grid.
