Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg was fastest after the second free practise session Friday at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, with Red Bull's Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel close behind.

Rosberg timed 1:32.248 for the fastest lap in the session, while Webber and Vettel finished second and third respectively with times of 1:32.547 and 1:32.680.

Home heroes Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes and Paul Di Resta of Force India were right on the tails of the top three posting the fourth and fifth fastest times respectively.

"On one lap the car is still quick, so qualifying should be okay," Rosberg said. "But the question mark is our race speed. We practised the race speed today (Friday) and it felt decent so far.

"But it could be a completely different picture on Sunday as the weather should be a lot warmer, so we don't know where we are right now compared to the others. I'm still quite confident that we can have a good weekend in front of our fans, our colleagues and their families."

Vettel, who will have a new teammate next season after Webber announced his decision to retire at the end of the season, will be looking for another pole position as he looks to extend his championship lead and win his first race in Europe since Monza in 2011.

"I think we have shown that we can be successful on pretty much all tracks," Vettel said. "Sure we could have been better in China and Barcelona, but that's how it went and I think we should be competitive here. Of course Ferrari will, again, be a factor. In the past they've always been good here, so why should that change?

"I don't think that this statistic (his relative lack of success on European tracks) is of real relevance for Sunday. We came here to deliver a great race -- hopefully one that we win. Silverstone is a track that I like and if the car supports that than it is even better. From what I have experienced today (Friday) I would say it looks pretty good."
