Donald Driver is considering pulling a Brett Favre-like move. The former Green Bay Packers wide receiver officially retired from the NFL earlier this offseason. Only four months in to a post-football life, Driver is already thinking of a possible return. While speaking at his charity softball game, Driver said he would unretire if the Packers asked him to.
After 14 seasons in the NFL, Driver has already been receiving calls from teams to come back and play for one more season. He would not identify those teams by name, saying he only had love for one club, the Packers. If they called, he would listen.
"I think the thing is, if you have the itch to continue to play, then it doesn't matter who you play for, because that's what you want to do. You just want to play the game. I love the game, but I only love one team," Driver told Fox Sports Wisconsin.
Driver has had discussions with other players who have decided to continue their careers with other teams after spending a majority of their time with another club. He said that every guy he talked to that was considered a franchise player with one team wished they had never switched. Driver is the Packers all-time leader in receptions (743) and yards receiving (10,137). The team originally drafted Driver in the seventh-round out of Alcorn State in 1999.
"I talked to so many different guys and every guy I've talked to said they wish they never went to another team. They always wished they would've retired with that team that they played 10,11,12 years for," Driver said.
At 33, Driver proved that age was beginning to catch up with him. Last season he only had eight receptions for 77 yards in 13 games played. He was a long way from the player that went six-straight seasons with over 1,000 yards from 2004-2009.
Driver said that he certainly does not miss going through training camp, but does not think it has really hit him that he will not be suiting up come September.
"I think once September hits and I know it's kicked off, I think that's when it will really hit me that I'm not playing football anymore."
