Liverpool Transfer Rumours: Reds Outbid by Southampton for Astori; Ince Move to Anfield Looking Increasingly Unlikely

Liverpool are set to lose out on the signing of Cagliari defender Davide Astori, with Southampton emerging as the favorites for the Italian international's signature.

Astori is expected to move on in January, with his agent Renzo Contratto admitting interest from several clubs.

Liverpool have reportedly made a £7 million ($11 million) offer for the Italian international, according to the Daily Mail, but the Saints have bettered that bid by offering nearly £10 million ($16 million).

"There are many clubs interested in Astori and among them I know there is also Southampton," Contratto told Sky Sports News last week.

"Both the player and Cagliari have said in the last days that, in the event that an important offer came, they will evaluate it together and decide what to do. This could happen even in January."

With Jamie Carragher expected to retire at the end of the season, Liverpool are in the market for a central defender, and Astori, strong and good in the air, would fit the bill perfectly.

However, the need for Southampton in the defensive department is much higher, and Nigel Adkins might just beat out their more illustrious rivals to the signature of the 25-year-old.

Meanwhile, the move for Thomas Ince is looking increasingly unlikely with Blackpool refusing to budge from the £6 million ($9.6 million) asking price.

Liverpool are not yet ready to increase their offer from £4 million ($6.4 million) and despite Ince taking a personal interest in trying to manufacture a move back to Anfield, the chances of completing the deal have considerably decreased.

Another Liverpool target Jack Butland, though, is available for £6 million ($9.6 million) with Birmingham City chairman Peter Pannu admitting the club were in serious financial trouble.

"I can't say that we are in a very wonderful situation, I would be lying if I said that," Pannu told the Birmingham Mail.

"This is a very tricky question (player sales). What I can say is that -- and I might be blasted for this by the fans -- but no-one is for sale and everyone is available. As at any club.

"Give me a £15 million ($24 million) offer for Jack Butland, can I say no? I have rejected £6 million from Southampton (in the summer) but I rejected it when our finances were OK.

"As the time is ticking, I might not be able to reject it if I get something similar. I do have a responsibility to keep the club running.

"My top priority now -- and if I do offend anyone, I care not -- is to make sure this club stays afloat."
