Eagles Release DeMeco Ryans

The Philadelphia Eagles have released linebacker DeMeco Ryans, according to the Eagles' team website. Ryans was due $4.5 million in salary in 2016 and was in the final year of his two-year contract with the team. The Eagles will save $3.5 million by releasing the veteran linebacker, creating more cap space for this offseason. Philadelphia has already made some major changes this offseason, and is likely looking to build with youth under their new coaching staff.

The 31-year-old linebacker recorded 49 combined tackles, forced a fumble and made an interception during the 2015 season. Ryans showed that he could bounce back after rupturing his Achilles tendon in 2014 and will likely still have interest from multiple teams around the league.

The move did not come as a surprise, as many thought Ryans could be on his way out the door this offseason, according to FOX 29 TV/WIP's Howard Eskin. The former second round draft pick just finished his 10th season in the league, and his release opens the door for linebacker Jordan Hicks to step up in his second season in Philadelphia.

Hicks recorded 50 combined tackles, a sack and two interceptions his rookie season with the Eagles and will look to be an impact playmaker on the defensive side of the ball in 2016. The Eagles have plenty of holes they will look to fill this offseason, and quarterback is likely at the top of the list as they are reportedly expected to re-sign quarterback Sam Bradford.

With Ryans off the books the Eagles will look to address needs at quarterback, offensive line, safety and defensive end both through free agency and the 2016 NFL Draft.
