The Pittsburgh Steelers are one of the heavy Super Bowl favorites heading into the 2016 season but still need some key defensive pieces to be considered a Super Bowl contender, according to ESPN's Jeremy Fowler. The Steelers need help in both their secondary and offensive line this offseason, and two players Pittsburgh could look at as potential free agent targets are safety Eric Weddle and former Steelers' cornerback Brice McCain.

While Weddle may seem a stretch given the Steelers current salary cap, he has made it known that he is looking to join a Super Bowl contender in the final years of his career, according to Bleacher Report's Jason Cole. The nine-year Chargers safety would have an immediate impact on Pittsburgh's defense and give them the hard-hitting safety they have been missing since Troy Polamalu.

Weddle is reportedly expected to visit with several teams this offseason and considers a championship-caliber team a priority over money. The Steelers have a bunch of players from their secondary becoming unrestricted free agents in March and could look to rebuild their defense with Weddle leading the back end.

While it's unknown if the Steelers will have much interest in signing a veteran like Weddle, they have placed a call to McCain about working out for them after the NFL combine, according to Fowler. The Dolphins corner recorded 39 tackles, 10 passes defended and an interception in his first season in Miami and is reportedly gaining interest on the free agent market, as both the Buccaneers and Titans are interested in him.

While the Steelers secondary is a big question this offseason, so is their offensive line. The Steelers will likely also look to bolster those positions through the 2016 NFL Draft, but there is no question that the addition of a player like Weddle at the right price would improve their chances next season.
