Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Robert Griffin III Favored Over Carson Wentz, Jared Goff as Joey Bosa, Shaq Lawson Drafted for Greg Hardy Replacement?

Jerry Jones continues to play games about who will be the backup quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys in 2016. The team has already ruled Johnny Manziel out as an option to help Tony Romo which leaves them with a few realistic free agency options and the NFL Draft. While reports say the Cowboys will learn towards defense in the first round of the draft, is Robert Griffin III the new favorite to sign on behind Romo?

It has been well documented that Griffin will be released from the Washington Redskins once NFL rules allow the move. That opens the door for him to get a change of scenery and re-start his NFL career. Jones was asked about the chances the former Baylor star returns to Texans the Cowboys' owner was not short on the praise for Griffin and his ability to compete in the NFL.

"Well, I'm a fan of RGIII," Jones said, via the Dallas Morning News. "He's got it. He's a driven young man. I'm a big admire of RGIII."

With Manziel out of the picture, Griffin would be the most logical choice at the backup role for Dallas. The team wants someone young that can potentially develop be a starter in the future. While the jury is still out on whether or not Griffin can really start in the NFL, giving him a chance to develop behind a good veteran quarterback with no pressure might be the ideal situation for him. Griffin would not cost Dallas much and allow the team to focus on other needs in the draft.

Targeting Griffin means the Cowboys have no plans on drafting quarterback with that No.4 pick. According to the Dallas Morning News, while the Cowboys like players like Jared Goff and Carson Wentz, they have more pressing issues that the first-round pick can be used for. With none of the rookie quarterbacks looking like homerun hits, the Cowboys are not looking to waste that early pick on someone.

Instead, Dallas will look to defense for that first pick with pass rushing a priority. Joey Bosa is a growing favorite for the Cowboys. The former Ohio State star would be the idea replacement for Greg Hardy and Rolando McClain who do not appear poised to return in 2016. According to Sports Illustrated's mock draft, the Cowboys could also select Myles Jack out of UCLA depending on whether or not he is healthy. They could also look at Shaq Lawson should someone like Bosa get selected before they pick. Those selections are better guaranteed than a quarterback.
