As New Orleans Considers Possible Name Change, Will The Hornets Name Make Its Way Back To Charlotte?

After buying the New Orleans Hornets franchise earlier this year, owner Tom Benson says that he would now like change the name to something more fitting to the state of Louisiana.

The Hornets moved from Charlotte to New Orleans back in 2002, and since then have seen a tremendous amount of support from the local fan base. Before Wednesday's game, Benson's wife, Gayle, reiterated that idea and added that the franchise also would like to change the team colors from teal and purple to red, gold and navy blue.

With the name Hornets possibly being up for grabs in the near future, Charlotte Bobcats owner Michael Jordan has shown interest in bringing the name back to Charlotte.

"It's definitely an interest down the road, but right now it's the New Orleans Hornets," Jordan told the Charlotte Observer. "We would definitely entertain the opportunity. That's as much as we can say right now. We've heard the community ask the question, and we would listen."

Still, even if the name does become available, owners and fans won't have the final say. Though the NBA has addressed that they've been made aware of the Hornets' intentions, they  hold the ultimate decision on team names and colors.
