Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Will Cowboys Keep Rolando McClain?

The Dallas Cowboys took a chance on Rolando McClain a couple of seasons ago, since then he has been productive but lacked the consistency of some of the better linebackers in the NFL.

McClain who once was labeled a draft bust spent three years with the Oakland Raiders before prematurely retiring. In those three years with the Raiders he recorded, 246 tackles, 6.5 sacks, a safety, 20 pass defenses, an interception, a forced fumble and played in 38 out of a possible 48 games. After returning to the NFL in 2014 his Cowboy career has been solid. McClain recorded 161 tackles, 3 sacks, 6 pass defenses, 3 interceptions, a forced fumble, a defensive touchdown, and played in 24 of a possible 32 games.

These numbers have shown that McClain has improved in his pass coverage and has developed a better nose for the ball however his ability to generate pressure has decreased. The Cowboys need a consistent cover linebacker and McClain is growing into that role but they do also have Sean Lee and several developing players at that position.

McClain also on average has missed around a quarter of each season he has spent with the Cowboys so that should also factor into their decision, every game is important. Really the market will dictate whether or not McClain remains with the Cowboys and it is quite possible he resigns with the team on a team friendly deal however the Cowboys are unlikely to overpay for his services.
