NY Mets Rumors: Denard Span Signed After Yoenis Cespedes Contract Denied? Alex Gordon, Justin Upton, Dexter Fowler Available in Free Agency

With the MLB offseason in full swing, the New York Mets still have work to do. The team did a quality job of beefing up the infield in the wake of Daniel Murphy's exit in free agency, but big holes still remain on the roster that most be looked at. The biggest might be in the outfield. While the Mets did acquire Alejandro De Aza to help with outfield depth, is the team still searching for another body for the roster?

According to ESPN.com, Denard Span could be an option for the Mets as they continue to show interest in the outfielder. Span recently held a workout for teams to see that he was healthy and now agent Scott Boras is telling MLB.com that he expects a contract to be done in the near future for his client. Span was searching for a deal worth upwards of four years which the Mets have been hesitant to hand out, but the team is in desperate need of outfield help.

Yoenis Cespedes is not coming to New York no matter how much teammates and fans want him in Queens. According to Jon Heyman of CBSSports.com, Cespedes has at least six or seven teams interested in him and the Mets are not expected to be one of them despite having the money to give him the contract that he wants. Heyman reports that the Giants, Angels, Tigers and Cardinals are the top options for the outfielder as the Mets rule themselves out.

If New York cannot acquire Span, there are options for the team should they feel the need to add another player. The outfield market is still strong with big names remaining available. Justin Upton, Alex Gordon and Dexter Fowler still remain unsigned at this point in the offseason. All three of those players will command a big deal similar to what Cespedes wants. That means the Mets will either have to be content with what they have or be willing to spend a little extra to acquire another solid bat.

According to ESPN.com, Gordon wants a contract worth four years and $20 million. Upton is looking to cash in as well while Fowler might be a little cheaper. Given Span's age, he is the best bargain of the bunch. New York would be wise to take a serious look.
