Sam Bradford might be the man in charge for the Philadelphia Eagles this season, but that does not mean the team is ready to pay him like one. The quarterback is coming off two ACL injuries in the final year of his rookie contract and is playing to get a big-time contract next offseason. After reports that the Eagles might look to extend Bradford sooner rather than later, Philadelphia has halted negotiations for the season.
According to Ed Werder of ESPN, the Eagles and Bradford have tabled discussions of a contract that was expected to be a short-term deal. The Eagles were likely looking to secure Bradford for at least another season which would buy them time to determine what his long-term worth is. The two sides had begun talking about a deal as NJ.com reported Bradford wanted a no-trade clause placed in his deal. Now, after preseason success, Werder writes the dynamics of a contract have changed and the two sides are no longer discussing the future.
Bradford appears to be betting on himself in terms of a contract. Considering his injury history, many analysts believed the quarterback would look for some kind of security entering the season should something go wrong. However, Bradford looked strong and healthy in preseason play throwing for 156 yards and three touchdowns during his time on the field. The quarterback believes if he can repeat that success, a lucrative, long-term contract is in his future rather than a short-term deal.
Bradford certainly looks comfortable in the Eagles' offense as he has an improved array of weapons to work with. Philadelphia released their first depth chart of the season ahead of their Week 1 game against the Atlanta Falcons. The running back position was no surprise with DeMarco Murray topping the group, but the wide receiver rotation offered a few surprises. Jordan Matthews is sitting at the top of the group as the primary replacement for Jeremy Maclin, but behind him is Nelson Agholor as the No.2 receiver and then Josh Huff coming in third.
The receiver rotation has been an area of speculation considering the Eagles are essentially trying to replace both Maclin and DeSean Jackson. Agholor has looked impressive as a rookie, showing real talent and great speed. Huff did not have the best preseason, but has plenty of hype surrounding his abilities on the field. Riley Cooper is sitting at the No.4 spot, making the roster after many believed he might be a cut.
The tight end position is also an area of focus. After missing the entire preseason, Zach Ertz returns following groin surgery. According to Jeff McLane of the Philadelphia Inquirer, the tight end was back at practice for the first time, but is doubtful to play in the home opener. Instead, Brent Celek will get the starting nod which is something fantasy owners should pay attention to.
