San Diego Chargers News: Philip Rivers Contract Extension Coming Before Season? Eric Weddle Not Getting New Deal

The Chargers have been looking to extend Phillip Rivers contract for the entire 2015 offseason but it appears as if a deal won't happen anytime soon.

Phillip Rivers is 33 but has all of the potential leverage in this situation. He has been cordial to the team in the media stating two things; (1) he would not be too thrilled if the Chargers moved to Los Angeles, (2) he would like to return home to Alabama eventually to coach football. The best course of action for the current state of the franchise seems to be allowing Rivers to play out the rest of his days in San Diego and to keep bringing in more weapons for him to use.

The Chargers losses have not been entirely on Rivers but on a multitude of failings on both sides of the ball. Rivers is one of the best quarterbacks in the league so it only makes sense to offer him some long term security while building around him.

This is the same problem the team has with veteran Eric Weddle, though to a much larger extent. The Chargers want to extend Rivers but for their price, when really if they want to win a Super Bowl you lock down Rivers and the other talented core pieces on your roster. The problem is the Chargers do not know if they can win with Rivers, Weddle, or anyone on their team with the exception of Melvin Gordon.

The Chargers would like to extend Rivers but they realize other aspects of their football team need a lot of work plus tying up a lot of the franchises money into a contract with Rivers may not guarantee them success but probably the opposite. At the end of the day the two sides must come to terms on an agreement because Philip Rivers staying a Charger is not only what is best for his career but is also what is best for the Chargers.
