Indianapolis Colts Rumors: TY Hilton Becomes Free Agent Without New Contract? Andrew Luck Deal Likely

TY Hilton has stated multiple times this offseason that he wants Indianapolis to pay him and he might not be asking.  Hilton stated in an interview "if they want to pay me, they'll pay me". Hilton could be alluding to the fact that the Colts drafted Phillip Dorsett and signed Andre Johnson possibly in preparation for his departure. The fact of the matter is that TY Hilton is the best wide receiver on the Colts and if they want to make the playoffs, TY Hilton is the best deep threat they have. Hilton has one problem though, he is pretty small for a wide receiver.

At 5'9, 178lbs Hilton has done pretty well for such a small wide receiver but he still has very little leverage contractually. Dez Bryant and Demaryius Thomas are both over 6 feet tall which allows them to be incredibly aggressive when pursuing the ball. Hilton has breakaway speed and can be used in a very versatile manner. Hilton's and the smaller wide receivers in the NFL continue to find their value diminishing. This is due largely in part to teams going after bigger defensive backs to out muscle wide receivers, this has forced pass heavy teams into selecting wide receivers who are much larger than usual (see Mike Evans as the prime example). He is also up against some stiff completion contractually from his teammates Dwayne Allen, Coby Fleener, and eventually Andrew Luck. The Colts might not have the cap space to sign Hilton as he seeks to cash in on a long term deal. Hilton will most likely seek to make more than players like DeAndre Hopkins, Keenan Allen, Golden Tate, Julian Edelman, and Jordan Matthews.
