Dallas Cowboys Rumors: Shonn Greene Free Agent Option With Ben Tate, Felix Jones, Chris Johnson Targets After Darren McFadden Injury?

The Dallas Cowboys may look at Shonn Greene as an option on the free agent market along with Ben Tate, Felix Jones, Chris Johnson, Daniel Thomas or Steven Jackson as potential targets to add at running back ahead of training camp, as the team is dealing with injuries to Darren McFadden and Ryan Williams in minicamp workouts.

The Cowboys have already added Lache Seastrunk heading into minicamp, but he is not likely making the 53-man roster and is mainly a camp back. According to Pro Football Talk, Greene was released by the Tennessee Titans ahead of the start of their minicamp and now he is a free agent. The Titans have Bishop Sankey and Dexter McCluster on the roster and they added David Cobb in the NFL draft at running back. Greene now is free to sign with any team and he could be a target for the Cowboys, Patriots and Oakland Raiders.

NFL.com reports that Greene was the odd man out in Tennessee and that he had not been impressive with the team during his run over the last two years. During his time with the Titans Greene played in 24 games and had 687 rushing yards and six touchdowns. Greene had the best years of his career in New York with the Jets when he put together back to back 1000 yard rushing seasons. Greene had signed a three-year, $10 million contract with the team in 2013. During his time with the Jets Greene rushed for 1054 and 1063 yards in 2011-12 and he scored 14 touchdowns in that time while not mossing any games.

Greene could be an option for the Cowboys along with free agents like Felix Jones, Chris Johnson, Daniel Thomas or Ben Tate. The team currently has Darren McFadden and Joseph Randle at the top of the depth chart and behind them are Lance Dunbar, Ryan Williams and Seastrunk. According to Mike Fisher at 103.5 the Fan in Dallas and Cowboys HQ, the team is "not dismissive of" the idea of bringing in Greene or another running back for training camp, especially if injuries to Darren McFadden and Ryan Williams linger.

Fisher writes that the team has been open to looking at "most cut vet RBs" and this comes after the team had workouts for Tate, Jones and Thomas earlier this offseason. The team may want another veteran back in camp if the injuries for McFadden and Williams keep them out of any workouts, but Jason Garrett said he is not concerned about the long term health of McFadden, who is dealing with a hamstring issue.

Seastrunk is more of a camp running back and heading into the season the Cowboys may want some more veteran depth behind McFadden and Randle. Williams has not been able to stay healthy the last few years, while Dunbar has shown some flashes in limited time with Dallas. Adding someone like Tate, Greene or Jones could give the Cowboys some insurance if McFadden or Randle go down. Last season McFadden played in all 16 games for the Raiders for the first time in his career.
