Knowshon Moreno is well-aware of where he stands with the Denver Broncos. While the running back may have had a breakout year with the team this season, there are two young stars sitting behind him that have fresh legs and cheaper contracts. While the running back is hopeful of a return to the Broncos for the long-term, team vice president John Elway is not making it his focus.
While cleaning out his locker, Moreno told NFL.com that he is Bronco and would love to return, but will "wait and see what happens." After putting up 1,038 yards and 10 touchdowns rushing while adding another 60 catches on the season, Moreno proved any doubters wrong this season. He showed himself as a capable starting running back after a few down years in the league. However, the Broncos could view him as expendable.
Moreno will request a nice pay raise after his increase in production. The running back made $1.7 million last season. He could earn a deal of around $4 million, similar to what Reggie Bush or Fred Jackson earned with their respective teams. As a result, Ian Rapoport of NFL.com notes the Broncos do not expect to hold on to Moreno since they have Montee Ball and Ronnie Hillman behind him.
Elway spoke with the media about the upcoming free agency period. The team vice president noted the front office was just getting started on contracts and he will see how things play out. While he briefly touched on Moreno, he spent more time praising the progress of Hillman and Ball.
Elway told reports the team has very high expectations for Ball after drafting him in the second round last year. He spent most of his time as a backup to Moreno, but looks poised for a starting job next season. Hillman will remain in place to create competition. He barely saw the field last season, but remains a solid roster addition.
Moreno will get plenty of attention when he becomes a free agent. Denver might not be willing to offer him $4 million a year, but a team like the Miami Dolphins or Cleveland Browns will certainly love to have his big numbers on the field.
