The Seattle Mariners have reportedly signed Robinson Cano to a 10-year, $240 million contract according to reports from ESPN after talks had broken down on Friday and now he will be leaving the Yankees for the Pacific Northwest for the next decade and the team now could make a David Price trade to keep things going as they make big moves.
The Major League Baseball offseason has been getting hot lately with trades and big deals involving names like Prince Fielder, Ian Kinsler, David Freese and Jacoby Ellsbury and another one might be brewing in the coming weeks, as David Price could be traded soon by the Rays and teams like the Seattle Mariners, Texas Rangers, Los Angeles Dodgers, LA Angels, Pirates and Blue Jays could be interested.
Price is looked at as the top available pitcher on the trade market this offseason with names like Jeff Samardzija and Brett Anderson also out there and as a former Cy Young winner, any trade would likely snag some top prospects for the Rays. According to Jeff Passan at Yahoo Sports, the market for Price looks ready to heat up heading into the end of the year and late December and as the winter meetings go down, things could pick up for a deal. Passan writes that the Arizona Diamondbacks, Toronto Blue Jays, Seattle Mariners, LA Dodgers, Angel and Pirates as well as the Texas Rangers all are interested in Price and that could make for a wild contest to see who puts together the best package.
Passan writes that the team will start to gauge interest to see what they could get in a trade for Price and if the "price" is not right, there is a chance that they will hang onto him. The Rays spend where they can, but a 28-year-old pitcher with Cy Young-level talent won't come cheap and that is why they are exploring a trade. The Rays likely will want a top prospect in the deal and the team pulled off a similar move with James Shields earlier this year and got arguably the best prospect in baseball from the Royals in Wil Myers, meaning the Rays could ask for something fairly substantial in any deal for the star. Price doesn't hit free agency until 2015, but with arbitration he could end up costing a nice amount of money and one team that could be aggressive for Price is the Seattle Mariners.
The Mariners are coming off of another losing season and with Jack Zduriencik getting another chance to try and fix things five years into a seven year plan, he plans on being aggressive and has already mentioned that he has spoken with "everyone". The team has emerged as a possible suitor for Robinson Cano as well, but that may be just smoke and a way for the Cano team to get the Yankees into the mix. Price is coming off of another solid season and he made $10.1 million last year and his contract would be a good one to snag, as he remains under team control for two more years.
