Jay-Z Gives Cano Watch and Violates Agent Ethics? MLB Should Relax (Commentary)

The question here should be, if rapper, hip hop mogul and now sports agent Jay-Z gave you a watch for your birthday, would you turn it anyway? Some around the sports world are making a big deal about Jay-Z gifting Robinson Cano a watch for his birthday.

Okay, so Cano and Jay-Z are now in business together. Jay-Z is Cano's agent in a very pivotal point in the New York Yankees' second baseman. Cano is a free agent, searching for the biggest payday of his career. Jay-Z's job is to get him the money and Cano's job, well, produce and he has. So what's the big deal about Cano accepting a gift from a friend?

Do you think a $33,000 watch will sway Cano from partnering with Jay-Z? If Jay-Z told me to be a part of his press gang, a watch would not be necessary. Jay-Z embodies class, power and money within minorities and at this point, the man goes beyond just minorities. Jay-Z is a living legend who used his savvy street life to make big bucks legally. Whether in music or fashion, Jay-Z has always been able to make a payday. Marrying Beyonce proved Jay-Z was all about success. He has the most popular female artist in show business by his side. Blue Ivy is surely set for life.

Cano made $15 million off the Yankees in 2013 and who knows what else he made on the side through endorsements. What is a $33,000 watch to Cano at this stage of his career? Nothing. Jay-Z is not dealing with college kids here. Cano is not a high school LeBron James. We are talking about one powerful African-American figure gifting one of baseball's best. There is nothing wrong with that.

Anyways, Cano's birthday was in October, it's not like Jay-Z sent the gift as he was trying to woo Cano over to his agency. So MLB, relax. You're probably just mad you are not a part of Jay-Z entourage.
