The Detroit Lions are much improved from the terrible team they were a few years ago and part of that is due to the franchise moving on from former president Matt Millen, who had a disastrous run for the team, but it might not have been as bad as it was if he always had his way.

According to Pro Football Talk, Millen spoke to USA Today about his time with the Lions, saying that in 2005 that he wanted to draft DeMarcus Ware rather than wideout Mike Williams. Looking back, the decision is obvious since Ware is a beast and Williams is out of the league, but at the time Williams looked like he would be a star. The big issue for the Lions was the fact that they took a wideout in three straight drafts in the top 10 with none of them working out (Charles Rogers and Roy Williams as well) and with how good Ware is, it looks even worse.

Millen said that he was "talked out" of the decision by team scouts who said that Williams trended better as an NFL player, but clearly they were wrong. The Detroit defense is much improved now, but with Williams never working out for the Lions, it's another decision by Millen that was terrible.

Williams has 127 career catches for over 1,500 yards and after making just 37 catches over two season with the Lions, he had stints with the Raiders and Seahawks, where in 2010 he has his best season with 65 catches for 751 yards and two touchdowns.
