With Barcelona playmaker Cesc Fabregas rebuffing Manchester United's advances, David Moyes has quickly identified his next target in Real Madrid midfielder Luka Modric.
Modric has been on United's radar for a few seasons now, and Moyes is thought to be a long-term admirer of the former Tottenham player.
The 27-year-old had a difficult first season at Real Madrid, failing to make an impact and constantly finding himself warming the bench.
Modric could be open to a move back to the English Premier League, where he was considered as one of the best players before making his switch to Real last summer.
According to the Guardian, Moyes is ready to make a first bid of £25 million ($39 million) for the 27-year-old, who moved to Real from Spurs for £33 million ($51 million) last season.
Having seen two bids for Fabregas come to nought, United will be keen to wrap up the signing of a midfielder as soon as possible and Modric could very well be the answer.
However, it remains to be seen whether Real will be willing to sell and for what price with the Spanish giants currently locked in talks with Spurs over a world record move for Gareth Bale.
Meanwhile, Rio Ferdinand thanked the fans for their support during his testimonial, which United lost 3-1 to Sevilla at Old Trafford.
"I'm just disappointed we didn't get the win today," Ferdinand said. "It got a bit better after half time but we're disappointed. However, on Sunday (for the Community Shield against Wigan), we're going there to win.
"I appreciate it. Thank you to everyone who made the effort to come today and I had loads of friends and family here. It's great to celebrate with you fans who have done so much for us.
"I dreamed about winning things and being a winner, getting my hands on trophies. I came here and it was a great platform to do that. It's an honor to play for this club for so many years and I will continue to do so until they tell me to leave. I love it here. I became a Manchester lad.
"Your support is much needed -- we have a new manager now and everyone has got to get together behind him."
