Azarenka Withdrawal: Knee Injury Suffered in 1st Round Too Much to Bear?

Victoria Azarenka, one of the bright starts of Women's Singles tennis, withdrew from competition Wednesday morning after suffering an injury in her first round matchup at Wimbledon. Azarenka was unable to get over the pain and was forced to withdraw from the tournament.

"It's kind of a bone bruise. I'm sorry, I'm just not sure of the medical term,'' Azarenka said. ''The tendon and the ligament was not hurt, which as I said was a positive news. We tried to do everything as possible, but it was just very significant fall. To recover in two days after that seems impossible.

"Wimbledon is just a tournament I was looking so forward to. I love playing here. To not be able to kind of play just because of something with such a bad luck is very, very frustrating. I couldn't be more disappointed," Azarenka added.

Disappointing it is, especially since Azarenka had made improvements year after year at Wimbledon. She has never won the tournament, but she has come close entering the semifinals in 2011 and 2012. Azarenka had made semifinal appearances in four consecutive grand slams, including her victory at the 2013 Australian Open.

Azarenka was scheduled to face the 166th ranked, Flavia Pennetta, in the second round. For Pennetta, it's an easy entrance into the third round of Wimbledon.

As for Azarenka, we can only wish her a speedy recovery. The U.S. Open will take place in August and she has just about two months to get ready for that tournament where she finished as the runner-up last year.
