NFL News And Rumors: Giants And Victor Cruz Close To Contract Agreement

Wide receiver Victor Cruz and the New York Giants have been looking to come an agreement to terms on a new contract since the end of the season, and after months of seeking a long-term contract deal, it appears both sides now appear certain that an eventually deal will soon get done.

According to the New York Daily News, the long-awaited agreement will finally come to fortune between the Giants and their restricted free-agent receiver.

Cruz, who was once seeking a contract worth $10 million-$11 million per season, has reportedly lowered his demands to pay much closer to what the Giants were offering. According to sources of the Daily News, the Giants are offering a contract worth $8 million per year.

During this whole ordeal both sides have been optimistic for weeks that a deal would be done sooner than later, probably by the Giants' mandatory full-team minicamp on June 11, and possibly even in time for Cruz to return for some of the Giants' organized team activity sessions that begin next week.

Cruz still has the option of signing his restricted free agent tender offer, worth $2.879 million, at any time if a deal hasn't been reached. If he hasn't signed anything by June 17, the Giants can reduce that offer to $630,000.

Though he's made various public appearances over the last few months, he has essentially remained tight-lipped about his contract situation.

"I think it's smart," Giants quarterback Eli Manning said at the BTIG 11th annual Commissions for Charity Day on Tuesday in midtown, an event also attended by Cruz, who mostly said nothing of substance. "It's a good idea for him. There's nothing he can say right now that could make anything better or worse. I think it's best to kind of lay low."
