Reggie Bush Unlikely to Return: Why New York Jets Should Sign the Former Miami Dolphin Running Back (Commentary)

Reggie Bush to the Jets?
Miami Dolphins' running back Reggie Bush leaves the field after losing to the New England Patriots' in their NFL football game in Miami Gardens. "

The Maimi Dolphins and Reggie Bush look to be parting ways as the running back is unlikely to return to the club in 2013. The New York Jets clearly don't have sufficient running game to be considered solid competitors and Bush could make them into a successful team once again.

Let's look at the facts, the Jets haven't had a great running game since LaDanian Tomlinson retired in 2010. Ironically, this was the last time they found themselves in the playoffs. This means, Mark Sanchez needs an extra decent guy in the backfield and Bush could provide that for the struggling Jets team.

They can keep Shonn Greene who put up decent numbers rushing for 1,068 yards and six touchdowns in 2012. Adding Bush would only give them power running power and they could stay away from the awful idea of having Tim Tebow run the ball.

Bush isn't a backup running back anymore, so the two will have to split time. While with the Dolphins, Bush played in all 16 games and ran for 986 yards. The numbers don't look impressive, but Bush can make up the yardage since he's great coming out of the backfield. Bush displayed great hands in 2012 catching 35 passes for 292 yards and two touchdowns.

Bush would give Sanchez, if he's still a Jet in 2013, an extra weapon on offense. They had a dynamic running game in 2010 with Tomlinson and Greene in the backfield. That season, the Jets were fourth in the NFL averaging just over 148 yards per game. Tomlinson led the Jets in rushing with 914 yards and Greene came in second with 766.

The Jets should look into acquiring Bush, who made $4.5 million in 2012, since Sanchez proved he can't carry a team alone with his arm. The Jets need firepower on the receiving end but Sanchez was simply terrible in 2012.

Guys like Eli Manning, Peyton Manning and Drew Brees can play with anybody, but the Jets have to recognize that Sanchez just isn't an elite quarterback. He's great only when he has a running game as he proved in 2009 and 2010 when the Jets were just a game away from the Super Bowl.

Bush could be that guy, but they will have to give him a chance.

Also, Bush is a media magnet, which will make him fit perfect with Rex Ryan, though they'll probably be competing with the press at some point during the season.

What do you think about the Jets acquiring a guy like Bush? Do you think he can change their fate?
