The San Diego Chargers have offered Denver Broncos offensive coordinator Mike McCoy their vacant head coaching position.
McCoy will replace Norv Turner, who was fired along with general manager A.J. Smith after the Chargers finished 7-9 and missed the playoffs for the third straight season. His hiring comes just three days after the top-seeded Broncos were eliminated from the playoffs in a home loss to the Baltimore Ravens.
McCoy helped guide Denver to a solid year on offense. The Broncos ranked second in the NFL in total points with 481, and was fourth in total yards per game and fifth in passing.
San Diego has also interviewed former Chicago head coach Lovie Smith and former Arizona head coach Ken Whisenhunt. The Chargers we're also scheduled to interview Cincinnati Bengals offensive coordinator Jay Gruden, according to USA Today.
During his stint in Denver, McCoy tutored quarterbacks Kyle Orton and Tim Tebow in 2011, and Peyton Manning in 2012. With the Chargers, he'll work with Philip Rivers, who struggled this season, in large part due to a shaky offensive line.
During the season Rivers was sacked a total 49 times and committed 22 turnovers, giving him 47 turnovers in two seasons.
McCoy will also team up with new GM Tom Telesco to get the Chargers back on track in the AFC West.
