Liverpool are looking at a possible swap deal involving Ajax forward Siem De Jong, while talented Molde defender Vegard Forren has arrived on trial at Anfield.
Liverpool, who were expected to be one of the busier teams in the January transfer window, have only made one signing so far, bringing in Daniel Sturridge from Chelsea.
While, Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers' options have increased considerably with Fabio Borini also returning from injury, the manager is still on the lookout for another forward, and De Jong, due to his versatility, fits the bill perfectly.
Rodgers is considering making a move for the Ajax forward, with Oussama Assaidi going the other way, according to caughtoffside.
De Jong is a highly-talented forward, capable of playing across the frontline, or just in behind the striker. The 23-year-old, whose brother Luuk plays for Borussua Monchengladbach, recently expressed his admiration for the game in Germany, saying he would be open to a move away from Ajax.
"I would like to play in the Bundesliga someday," he told NuSport.
"I don't know why, but I think that the competition in Germany will suit me. Maybe it's because my brother Luuk already plays there.
"After the summer I still have a contract at Ajax for two seasons, so I'm not in a hurry to leave. I would like to win the Dutch title again this season and maybe also reach the Europa League final."
Those quotes suggest De Jong will only look to leave Ajax at the end of the season, but if Liverpool come along with a tempting proposal, a move in January cannot be entirely ruled out.
A player who could be set for a contract at Liverpool is Forren, with the Norwegian international to undergo a trial until the end of the week at Liverpool.
Forren is being tracked by several English Premier League clubs, including Everton, Southampton, Fulham and Sunderland, but Liverpool seem to have the upperhand for the signing of the £4 million ($6.5 million) rated center-back.
Meanwhile, Liverpool chief executive Ian Ayre said the club are working diligently towards making a few more signings. "It is about who Brendan has got his designs on," Ayre told Sky Sports. "What he wants, we will always say the same thing, if we find the right deals for the right players we will get it done.
"Everyone who operates in January knows it is always a difficult window, but we will do what we can. We have got targets in sight and if we can resolve those great, if not then we will move onto summer and do what we need to do.
"We have got the right team behind this, right amount of effort and right level of investment and it is about getting the right deal that fits.
"That is the most important thing, lots of teams including Liverpool have seen some deals done in haste, or at the wrong time and we are not going to let that happen and we are going to manage that efficiently and properly and get the best we can get."
