Sergio Aguero has split with his wife Giannina, the daughter of the legendary Diego Maradona, and with it ending their much-publicized four-year relationship.

Aguero and Giannina have a three-year-old son together, with the mother and child now reportedly permanently settled in Madrid.

The 23-year-old Giannina confirmed the breakup on Twitter. "We're separated," she wrote when a fan implored them to work things out. "A difficult year is coming to an end. There's been a lot of changes."

Reports in Argentina have suggested the couple were unhappy over each others' lifestyle. Aguero was also linked with Argentine pop singer Karina Tejeda, which was immediately denied.

The Manchester City striker has remained quiet over the issue, letting his personal matters, like it should be done, remain personal.

Further conversation in Twitter followed with a fan telling Giannina: "Aguero doesn't deserve you. He's stupid and an idiot."

Giannina, however, was supportive of her husband, saying a separation was always both parties' fault.

"Don't say that, he's the father of my son and he's nothing like what you say he is.

"When a couple finish it's both their faults."

Maradona introduced the two to each other four years back and the duo immediately hit it off as a couple.

Meanwhile, matters on the pitch also don't look so rosy for Aguero, with the striker definitely ruled out of Manchester City's FA Cup third-round match with Watford Saturday.

Aguero injured his hamstring in the 3-0 win over Stoke on New Year's Day, and City are not hopeful the diminutive Argentine can be passed fit for the English Premier League game against Arsenal next weekend.

Aguero, after being criticized for not scoring enough goals this season, was brilliant in the win against Stoke and looked to be getting back to his best.

If he does miss the Arsenal game, it is sure to come as a big blow to Mancini as he looks to keep pace with Manchester United in the Premier League.
