Prior to the January transfer window reopening, Arsenal have been linked with almost every striker even remotely available.
Demba Ba, David Villa, Klaas-Jan Huntelaar, to just name a few, were the names on everyone's lips when it came to a player who would wear the famous red and white of Arsenal.
However, there is one name that is more important that any of the above mentioned, and his signature could be the most important signing that Arsenal will make in the month of January.
Theo Walcott showed exactly what he is capable of in the 7-3 thumping of Newcastle in the English Premier League. The performance, which included a hat-trick, had everything you want from a striker - finishing, awareness and willingness to pass the ball when necessary.
The first goal, curled into the bottom of the side netting from an acute angle was the perfect example of Walcott's finishing abilities. That strike, more than anything, reminded you of Thierry Henry.
How many times have we seen Henry make a run down the left before curling one with his right foot, past the flailing arms of the goalkeeper and into the bottom of the net?
Arsene Wenger said Walcott had been taking lessons from Arsenal's record goalscorer in training, and on Saturday at the Emirates, there was every evidence that the 23-year-old was learning from the master.
The second goal was a typical striker's finish; awareness of what's on inside the box and showing the calmness to manufacture a finish in a crowded penalty area.
The third was one for the highlight reel. Walcott ran into the box at full tilt and despite being brought down by a Newcastle player, picked himself up before dinking the ball above goalkeeper Tim Krul to add the exclamation point to Arsenal's victory.
After the match, the England forward said talks are ongoing and he is confident a deal will be eventually agreed upon, as has Wenger many times. Giving Walcott a chance to play down the middle might have just been a masterstroke.
"He has done very well and it just typifies what I think he can do," Wenger said after the game. "He can play through the middle, I am convinced of that, and he can only get stronger in there. Overall I am pleased with his performance.
"You know, the intensity of my desire (to extend his contract) is exactly the same as it was before the game. My desire is to extend his contract, he belongs here and hopefully we can do it.
"I think he loves the club and the club loves him, and the reciprocity in love is the most difficult to find."
So, all the ingredients to enjoy a fruitful relationship between club and player are there.
While Ba, although Wenger has ruled out the chance of a move, and Villa will be good additions, with the Barcelona striker, particularly an eye catching one, the priority should be re-signing Walcott.
The 23-year-old can only get better and more consistent the more he plays, and now all Arsenal fans will want is an announcement on the club website confirming that Walcott has signed a "long-term" contract.
