Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed he would be looking to bring in some experienced players in the January transfer window, while the club ruled out a move for goalkeeper Jack Butland.
The Reds are expected to be one of the busiest clubs when the window reopens in a few days, with Chelsea forward Daniel Sturridge already as good as confirmed, after the 23-year-old underwent a medical last Sunday.
Thomas Ince of Blackpool and Butland of Birmingham were the other names mentioned, with Blues chairman Peter Pannu claiming Liverpool were interested in their highly-rated keeper.
"I understand there are talks with Liverpool, I understand that Everton might be interested, Southampton gave me an offer in the past, I know not whether they want him," Pannu told the Birmingham Mail.
However, according to Press Association Sport, Liverpool have asked people to treat those reports as "rubbish."
Ince, though, remains a serious target, while Rodgers also looks at a center forward to help reduce the burden on Luis Suarez as well as adding some experience to one of the youngest squads in the English Premier League.
"We certainly won't be able to do everything in January that would help us, but we'll be able to make some additions that will help the group," he said. "We can look forward to that and then review it again in the summer.
"There are lots of names -- I suppose it's like every club really. But in particular at a club like this, by virtue of association, for everyone who is linked with a club like Liverpool, it always good for someone's career and whatnot.
"There are very few names we have actually enquired about, but we're hoping we'll be able to do something in January pretty early on.
"We need that wee bit more experience, especially at the top end of the field. We're hopeful we can do that and then we'll see what else January can bring for us.
"We won't be spending a great deal of money. It'll be between January and the summer time that we can look at progressing the group and then hopefully go again.
"If you look at the top end of our pitch, Luis Suárez has been surrounded by up-and-coming young players. Those positions are the positions that make the difference.
"I'm all for young players, I want to develop young players, but I also know as a manager that there needs to be the right mix."
