David Villa is unhappy with life at Barcelona and is seriously considering making a move away from the Camp Nou, with Liverpool closely monitoring the situation.
Villas has hardly played for Barcelona from the start this season, with Tito Vilanova preferring to play Lionel Messi in the 'false 9' position more often than not.
With his chances restricted at Barca, Villa is seriously considering his future with the Catalans, with Liverpool ready to make a move of around €12-15 million (£9.7-12.2 million, $15.7-19.7 million) in the summer, according to Spanish newspaper AS.
The report suggests the likelihood of Villa looking for a new club in the summer is pretty high, with Barcelona also ready to offload the 31-year-old - provided they get a good offer - with the forward's contract set to run out in 2014.
Vilanova recently ruled out any players leaving the club in the January transfer window, meaning a move at the end of the season looks more likely.
Vilanova also expressed his reluctance to use Villa, saying he was finding it hard to find the perfect position for the striker. "There are times that, however much you move the systems, Villa doesn't fit," the Barca boss had said prior to their Copa Del Rey game against Cordoba last week.
Liverpool are in dire need of a striker, to reduce the burden on Luis Suarez. While the Reds are expected to complete the signing of a forward in January, Brendan Rodgers will definitely be keeping a keen eye on the possibility of making a move for the Spanish international in the summer.
Meanwhile, Rodgers insisted he is confident Raheem Sterling will sign a new contract with the club soon. The 18-year-old winger has come on leaps and bounds this season, but is stalling on signing a new contract with the Reds, leading to suggestions he could be sold in the next transfer window or at the end of the season.
Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal have been credited with an interest in the youngster, but Rodgers believes Sterling's future lies at Anfield.
"That will be resolved I'm sure, fairly soon," the manager said.
"He's a kid who has got this special ability so that no matter what is going on, he doesn't get too involved in it.
"He focuses on his football. Hopefully it stays that way."
