New York Mets Rumors: R.A. Dickey's Deal Upped as Talks Resume

Dec 11, 2012 09:17 AM EST

----------UPDATE------- Mets have a 3-year deal for $25 million on the table.

The New York Mets have been rumored to raising their offer to knuckleballer R.A. Dickey on Tuesday morning.

The Mets went from a two-year $16 million deal and added $4 million to the two-year deal. That means the Mets want to give DIckey two-years $20 million.

As Ken Rosenthal, senior writer for FOXsports.com, pointed out, the Mets are being pretty cheap right now as Joe Blanton was signed for two-years $15 million. It's almost an insult to Dickey, who won the 2012 Cy Young. As for Blanton, yeah, he wasn't even in consideration for the award and merits no comparison to the knuckleballer who was probably the best pitcher in the majors last season.

Blanton signed with the Angels as they hope to better their pitching now that Zack Greinke moved to the Dodgers.

For the Mets, the question has been whether or not to resign/extend Dickey or trade him for MLB ready talent. Dickey is owed just $5 million in 2013 and the Mets need and want outifleders and could also trade for a catcher.

The way I see it, if the Mets don't think Dickey is worth keeping in their future, then why not just trade the guy for some talent that can set your team up for the next two or three seasons. They can use Dickey winning the Cy Young as leverage, but teams are fearful of signing the knuckleballer because, well that's basically it, he is pitcher that lives off an unorthodox pitch. Not to mention he is 38.

However, what teams should not forget is that Tim Wakefield went deep into his career and was 45 when he retired completing a 19-year career in the majors.

Dickey might have a good three or four solid seaons ahead of him.

We will continue looking into this situation as the Mets and Dickey muscle out negotiations.
